International Path Philosophy Lessons
Posted September 19, 2025

about how marshmallows led students down a hands-on exploration of philosophy
This year, our International Path instruction has taken an exciting new step forward: the addition of Philosophy as a core element of our all-English curriculum.
Philosophy offers students an introduction to exploring big questions and not as abstract puzzles, but as lenses for deepening their understanding of what they are already studying. Instead of memorizing facts, students are encouraged to question, reflect, and connect ideas across disciplines.
-
In science, they consider the ethical implications of new discoveries and technologies.
-
In history, they examine how past ideologies have shaped the world we live in today.
-
In every subject, philosophy becomes a tool to unlock greater comprehension and genuine curiosity.
By cultivating these habits of mind, our students learn not just what to think, but how to think which is a skill set that will serve them throughout their academic journey and beyond.
NEW Group Learning Course:
Business Studies
Posted September 19, 2025
Our adolescent learners are engaging in a new
Microgreen Business Studies Course, designed
within the Montessori framework of purposeful
work and real-world connection.
The microgreen room serves as a prepared
environment, where students take responsibility
for the full cycle of work: planting, tending,
harvesting, and preparing produce. From there,
the course extends into business studies — students calculate costs, explore pricing, manage production schedules, and reflect on sustainability and community needs.
This project offers a true cosmic education experience, linking biology, economics, and social responsibility. By engaging in authentic enterprise, students see how their work contributes to both their immediate environment and the larger society.

New Curriculum Direction:
International Path Goes Full English Instruction
Posted September 19, 2025
This year, our S1 Middle School program has been redesigned to offer two distinct options:
a Bilingual Path with full Chinese instruction plus dedicated English lessons,
and an International Path with full English instruction, required Chinese study, and cross-class projects.
The International Path now includes an expanded curriculum — History, Geography, Science, Philosophy, Mathematics, Business Studies, and Microgreen Farming — with an emphasis on skills over rote content.
Past Student Successes

Our S1 Middle School program is a fairly new department in HMEI. However, this has not held back our past students from making great progress and taking exciting new steps towards their future goals.
Of the students that have graduated our S1 program in Grade 9, the following achievements are notable as we have had:
1 accepted into the American School in Taichung
1 accepted to a Canadian High School
2 accepted to a high school program in the US
1 attended an Australian Montessori
high school and graduated top of the class
Others have gone on to well respected local high schools and bilingual programs
